What Is EN 13432 and What Does It Mean for Packaging and Adhesives?

EN 13432 is the basic standard used to evaluate the industrial compostability of packaging in Europe. The concept is not only parting of the material; biodegradation is a holistic conformity approach that covers measurements such as disintegration, certain component limits and quality of the formed compost.

What means industrial compost?

Industrial composting is carried out under controlled temperature, humidity, ventilation and time. Home compost has lower and variable conditions, so EN 13432 compliance is not the same as the claim of compostability at home. The product is part of the practical environmental result to reach the correct organic waste collection system.

Packing components are evaluated together

Even if paper or film carrier is suitable alone, adhesive, printing, coating, label and additives affect the behavior of finished packaging. The amount and product geometry used is important. The adhesive belongs to a certified product family does not mean that the final packaging certificate is automatically formed.

Certificate and scope control

The certification body should be controlled by the full commercial name, scope, validity date and permitted usage rate of the product. Seedling or similar markings are associated with independent certification. When marketing expression is prepared, 'en tested according to 13432' should be protected with 'certificate' separation.

Practical approach in choosing adhesive

The packaging design team must first determine the target waste scenario and certificate scope. Then glue performance is tested with process temperature, surface compatibility and usage rate certification requirements. Supplier document, certification body and final packing verification should be collected in one file.

Application control list

  • Separate industrial and household compost claims.
  • List all components of the finished packaging.
  • Verify certificate coverage and validity.
  • Record adhesive usage rate.
  • Combine marketing statement with technical file.

Conclusion

EN 13432 is the verification framework for the finished packaging and defined industrial compost scenario, not a single raw material label.
