Bead, Dot, and Spray Application Methods for Industrial Adhesives

beads, dot and spray are more than one nozzle option; application strategies that determine how to transfer the load of adhesive to the surface. The same product can show different open time, cooling and consumption behaviour in different patterns. Pattern should be selected according to surface geometry and load direction.

Bead: continuous and guided bond line

Bead gives dense adhesive throughout a narrow line. Edge closure is controlled in carton box, profile and channel applications. Continuous bead liquid or air barrier can provide the advantage in the desired work; but it increases long or thick line consumption than its requirement. Corner rotations and start-up points should be checked.

Dot: precise and low quantity fixing

Dot leaves low quantity to the exact point in small parts or temporary gripping. Valve response in short cycle automation and cut quality is critical. As the distance between the dots increases, the load concentrates on several zones; the design under the peeling effect asks attention. Weight and location of each point should be verified.

Spray: distributed contact on wide surface

Spray cover wide area with fine filaments; it is useful in foam, fabric, felt, isolation and composites. Grammage can create flexible and light bond line as it is dispersed into wide area. If the air pressure changes distance and movement speed, the pattern is broken; overspray and dry zones affect quality.

Selection and testing

Define connect area, load direction, surface sink, heat precision, open time and target grammage. Compare the same part with candidate patterns and break mode, cycle time and price. The design should meet the repeatability and maintenance convenience in production not only the highest force.

Application control list

  • Map the load direction with the connect area.
  • Measure gram/piece for each pattern.
  • Observe the difference of open time and cooling.
  • Check cut, overspray and location repeat.
  • Do break mode test in actual service condition.

Conclusion

There is no universal superiority between beads, dot and spray. The correct pattern is the pattern that bears the required load with minimal but stable material.
