Why Is Operating Temperature Critical in Hot Melt Applications?
The operating temperature is more than the setting where hot melt adhesive becomes feasible. It affects the viscosity at the same time, how stable the surface soak, open time, equipment load and adhesive stay thermally inside the tank. If the settings outside the TDS range change the flow in the short run, it can lead to quality and maintenance problem in the long run.
Effects of low temperature
When the temperature is too low, the viscosity rises, the flow decreases, and the adhesive can cool without spreading enough to the surface. More force application or higher pressure of the pump may be required. The result can be thick but not kept good on the surface, unbalanced gramm and weak soaking. The solution to heat sensitive surfaces is to choose a suitable low melt formula, not to use the standard product excessive cold.
Effects of high temperature
It can facilitate the flow to improve the temperature; but it can speed up the oxidation and thermal degradation of the adhesive out on the manufacturer range. When combined with long waiting times, color change, smell, smoke, char formation and filter-nozul blockage can be seen. It also grows risk in terms of deformation of operator safety and heat sensitive substrates.
The actual temperature with set value may not be the same
The value on the tank screen does not guarantee the actual temperature at the nozzle end. Sensor position, control calibration, hose loss, environment and production tempo can make temperature difference. The stem should be taken individually in the analysis of the tank, hose and aplicator; verification should be done with appropriate and safe measurement method. Especially shift start and intensive production memory should be compared.
Establish a stable temperature window
Start target temperature from TDS range. Connect quality with the same grammage and nozzle, open time, follow the application pattern and equipment behavior. Set small and controlled steps if required. Reduce tank temperature according to manufacturer advice in long postures, reduce unnecessary thermal standby; the restart procedure should be fully melted and secured homogenous flow.
Application control list
- Based on the range of application temperature in TDS.
- Save the tank, hose and aplicator separates.
- Compare continuous production with the onset of vardiya.
- Determine the procedure of reducing temperature for long postures.
- Verify each temperature change with bond test and consumption.
Conclusion
The most accurate temperature is the adjustment, which makes the adhesive the most fluid; provides sufficient soaking, controlled grammage and thermal stability together.
