Choosing Adhesives for Heat-Sensitive Materials

Even if the bond in a delicate material of heat looks strong, the surface may occur shrinking, glare, crashing or internal structure damage. The choice of adhesive is therefore not only to the final force; the application is based on the instant heat transfer, contact time, grammar and surface appearance.

Identify the actual precision of the material

Foam or film sold with the same name can act differently due to different density, thickness and additive. The manufacturer’s technical knowledge is starting; controlled heat contact and visual-mechanical test should be performed in the actual part. Surfaces standing under thin, dark color or voltage can show the local heat more visible.

Four basic solutions

The hot melt running at lower temperature can be fine spray pattern, reagent or water-based system and pressure-sensitive tape candidate. Open time of each option, fixture, drying, VOC, equipment and service temperature are different. The purpose is to create a bond to the production speed while maintaining the surface.

Reduce heat dose

Temperature is not single variable; applied mass, nozzle distance and contact area determines the heat transmitted to the surface. Fine filament spray can cool quickly; small frosts can reduce total heat load. But when the grammage is reduced, the surface should be wet and the load carrying capacity should be confirmed again.

Aging and appearance test

The sample should not be examined only in the first minute. Adhesive pull or tension relaxation can create trace on the surface after hours. Hot-cold cycle is assessed according to the actual service condition of UV requirement, color transfer, smell and stretch. Admission criteria should be written in a measured format.

  • Add material lot and thickness to sample plan.
  • Measure grammar and contact time together with temperature.
  • Compare low melt, spray and alternative chemistry.
  • Monitor delayed deformation with the first view.
  • Complete service temperature and stretch test.
