What Is NSF H1? Choosing Lubricants for Food Production Facilities

NSF H1 is a record category for lubricant applications in the field of food processing where there is a possibility of accidental food contact. H1 expression does not mean that the product is food component or can be used unlimited for direct contact. The purpose is a controlled maintenance scheme where the technically avoided contact is avoided.

Limit of H1 category

H1 in NSF category definitions covers general lubricants, which are likely to contact the coincidence. Equipment design and maintenance application should minimize the lubricant leak into food. Different categories such as 3H in mold separator applications that need direct contact can be agenda. The application point should not be decided only with H1 tag without correctly classified.

How do we verify the product?

In addition to the declaration of the supplier, the product name and registration number should be controlled in the current listing directory of NSF. It is important that names on label, TDS and SDS are compatible with each other. Technical specifications such as viscosity, temperature, load and water resistance of the product should also be suitable for the equipment; H1 record does not replace the performance selection.

Storage and cross contamination

Food grade lubricants are kept in separate and marked area; transfer containers, grease guns and pumps should be defined on product basis. Using common equipment with H2 or general industrial lubricant creates a risk of cross contamination. The cover of opened packages should be kept closed and lot-raf life records should be monitored.

Integration to maintenance procedure

For each lubrication point, product, quantity, frequency, responsible and cleaning step should be determined. Protectives and dripping control should be examined, preventing excessive oil from spreading into food field. Not only a certificate file in the audit, the right product in the field should match the right point and show the applied task records.

  • Classification whether the application point requires H1.
  • Verify product name in NSF listing directory.
  • Match TDS performance with load, speed and temperature.
  • Take grease gun and transfer equipment on product basis.
  • Process quantity, frequency and lot record into maintenance system.

Conclusion

NSF H1 is an important conformity indicator in food plant, but it is completed with safe lubrication, accurate spot classification, technical suitability and disciplined application.
