What Is Spray Hot Melt and When Should It Be Used on Large Surfaces?

Spray hot melt is the application method where molten adhesive is distributed into a controlled pattern consisting of thin filaments with the help of compressed air. The purpose is not to fill the surface with a full film; it is to create sufficient contact points in the wide area with low and repeatable grams.

Why spray instead of beads?

The beads creates a linear and dense bond line; the spray can emit the same adhesive amount into wider area. It facilitates wide and light surfaces such as foam, fabric, felt, insulation and composite reinforcement. Faster cooling of fine filaments can provide advantage in heat sensitive materials with appropriate formulation.

What is the pattern quality?

Air pressure, adhesive temperature, viscosity, nozzle structure, distance and gun motion speed together determine the pattern. Over-air overspray and fine, kopuk fibers can create a narrow and irregular coating of less air. The desired pattern should be covered with the target surface without leaving a dry island but without polluting unnecessary space.

Difference with solvent-based spray

Hot melt systems are usually applied with a 100 percent content approach and the bond is formed with cooling. In the solvent-based systems, issues such as evaporation, ventilation and delicacy are more pronounced in process design. Nonetheless, each hot melt is automatically safer or convenient for every job; hot surface, operator protection and SDS requirements should be evaluated.

When shouldn’t be preferred?

If you need a very narrow, precise location bond line, bead or dot can be more controlled. Spray distribution in structural connections that need to be transported in a small area of high peeling load may not be enough alone. Selection, bond area, load direction, material heat precision and expected service conditions.

  • Identify the required bond area and load direction.
  • Standardize pattern width, distance and gun speed.
  • Optimize the temperature together with air pressure.
  • Control overspray and surface contamination.
  • Save Gram/m2 and break mode into trial form.
